Position Summary:

The mission of the Business Unit Accounting & Controls – Life and Disability (“Life & Disability Controllers”) team of the Corporate Controllers Department is to partner with our stakeholders by understanding their needs to ultimately provide a service that is superb, timely and valuable, while simultaneously expanding and improving our service capabilities.

This position will have ownership over the accounting and controls of New York Life Insurance Company’s individual Disability Income business.  The individual occupying this position will  work closely with the CFO, Controller and Valuation Actuary of the individual Disability Income business to ensure the integrity of the Disability Income general ledgers, deliver timely and accurate financial reporting and drive continuous improvement in our processes.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

This Senior Associate position will primarily be located in our Jersey City office working with our offshore partners and will have ownership for the following primary responsibilities:

  1. Oversight for the Company’s individual Disability Income business journal entries and account reconciliations.
  2. Stewardship of the Disability Income business general ledgers (Statutory Accounting and Management Reporting).
  3. Analysis of monthly, quarterly and annual results.
  4. Reporting and analysis of monthly sales figures.
  5. Oversight of accounting, reporting and settlements for multiple reinsurance treaties.
  6. The production and coordination of the Disability Income business schedules within the Life and Disability Controllers book, the group’s quarterly financial results package.
  7. Completion of Statutory Blue Book schedules and exhibits.
  8. Reporting to state regulators in regard to various annual state and regulatory filings
  9. Adherence with MAR/SOX compliance including documenting, testing, and reviewing controls and procedures.
  10. Some interaction with our external auditor, PwC, related to their performance of the annual financial statement audits.
  11. Continuously seeking faster and more efficient delivery of data and analytics, as well as more effective controller & business insights.
  12. Perform accounting research and develop recommendations related to technical issues.

 

Qualifications:

A successful candidate should have

  1. A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (a master’s degree is desirable but not required)
  2. At least 3-5 years of financial reporting experience in the insurance or reinsurance industries or public accounting
  3. Possess an understanding of Statutory accounting rules, procedures and internal controls and keeps up to date with current trends. 
  4. Expert level knowledge of excel and other reporting, analytical or programming tools is crucial to facilitate continuous improvement. 
  5. A self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills who demonstrates a high level of self-awareness, professionalism and integrity in all interactions is required.    
  6. Knowledge of SAP, Wdesk, and AFO is a plus
  7. Strong understanding of financial controls
  8. Should have a general understanding of life and disability insurance products
