The role will report directly to the SMA (Surplus Management Account) and Benefit Plans Lead of the Business Unit Accounting & Controls division within New York Life’s Corporate Controllers Department.

 

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of the quarterly MD&A on the Statutory financial statements of New York Life incorporated into the offering memorandum for a global medium term note program
  • Preparation of the annual MD&A on the Statutory financial statements of New York Life and its four insurance subsidiaries filed with insurance regulatory authorities
  • Preparation of materials presented at meetings of the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of New York Life and its four insurance subsidiaries
  • Preparation of certain SMA financial reporting schedules related to earnings and surplus, including forward looking projections
  • Assist with the preparation of New York Life’s Employee Benefit Plans’ financial statements
  • Identify and help with the implementation of opportunities to continuously improve New York Life’s financial reporting process
  • Perform ad-hoc projects for team with wide range of FP&A and Controllership responsibilities

 

Qualifications of a Successful Candidate

  • Strong working knowledge of and the ability to interpret Statutory Accounting Principles
  • Strong understanding of general ledger systems (SAP a plus) and other accounting and financial reporting software
  • Strong financial statement analysis skills and ability to provide variance explanations
  • Ability to work independently and strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to collaborate with others to build consensus
  • Strong personal, communication, writing and organizational skills to be able to work closely with others across the organization
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Wdesk (Workiva)
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of relevant accounting and financial reporting experience 
  • Bachelor's Degree; major or emphasis in Accounting preferred
