Position Summary

  • The Data Catalog Product Owner serves as the product owner for the enterprise data catalog solution, delivering various catalog services which enable data stewards as well as business stakeholders and technology partners to search, find, steward, trust and understand enterprise data and analytics. S/he is responsible for the daily operations of the catalog including conceptual design of operations, configuration, data source connections, lineage mapping, operational monitoring, user access, bulk loads of metadata, as well as the management and evolution catalog capabilities and application upgrades.  The candidate will work closely with business subject matter experts and technology teams to integrate the data catalog into the delivery life cycle for data solutions and will champion the platform as the official repository for technical metadata and lineage across the enterprise.  The Data Catalog Product Owner also provides expert level assistance and training of relevant tools and technologies and drives the issue management process with the application vendor.  Additionally, the Data Catalog Product Owner will support data quality initiatives as needed by collaborating with data stewards and business subject matter experts to define, measure, and the quality of the company’s data.  Success in the role will be measured by the degree to which data knowledge and technical capabilities support the Data Strategy, Governance and Enablement team’s ongoing, client-based initiatives, ultimately providing solutions to a wide range of internal stakeholders throughout New York Life.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a member of the Data Strategy, Governance, & Enablement team, with a concentration on the advancement of the data catalog capabilities
  • Document, assess, influence and synthesize business requirements to develop, enable and advance data catalog, governance, and stewardship capabilities
  • Design and own the concept of operations through the development of business processes and standards for the data catalog
  • Be the expert in the use of and provide training on data governance technologies with a concentration on data catalog
  • Act as technical support to the network of emerging data stewards, data consumers, data practitioners, and technology partners throughout all lines of business and geographies with a concentration on data catalog
  • Facilitate and promote usage and adoption of the data governance tools, particularly among data professionals, i.e., data scientists, data engineers, business analysts, data management teams, etc.
  • Provide daily operational support of the Enterprise Data Catalog, including application configuration, maintaining connections and integrations to data platforms across the ecosystem, maintaining data, capability enhancements, and security role management
  • Advocate for the integration of the data catalog with technology application and data store owners to ensure collaboration and communication
  • Establish connections and monitor daily jobs for the automated extraction of technical metadata and lineage from data platforms and analytical technologies
  • Execute APIs and processes to manually bulk load metadata into the catalog when necessary
  • Develop and publish catalog content and usage metrics for use in metrics dashboards
  • Test and perform application upgrades
  • Resolve internal help desk tickets related to the data catalog and escalate platform defects to the software provider, Informatica
  • Coordinates application outages with technical and business stakeholders
  • Understand business requirements for data and translate them into actionable specifications and measurements for data quality analysis, reporting, assurance, and cleansing
  • Rapidly prototype, build and deploy production level profiles and scorecards to measure, monitor, publish, and/or enhance the quality of critical datasets via streaming and batch processes
  • Build POCs for solutions to current issues or future opportunities

 

Experience

  • Demonstrated expertise in the Informatica platforms, especially the Enterprise Data Catalog and Data Quality solutions
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with a broad set of data management and analytics technologies, including relational databases, data lakes, NoSQL databases, BI platforms, data movement, and data streaming
  • Demonstrated familiarity with IT operations, functions, and services
  • Demonstrated experience translating functional business data rules and requirements into technical rules, rule specifications, mapping, and mapplets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data quality techniques and transformations that can be applied to measure or enhance the quality of a given data element
  • Strong ability and persistence to analyze business and technology requirements, hypothesize cause and effect relationships, model current and future state business processes, and solve complex, nuanced problems ranging from single applications to enterprise-wide
  • Expert level knowledge of data management processes, standards, best practices, and trends
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, communicate, build relationships, mentor and influence a diverse community of data professionals across lines of business and functional areas
  • Track record of innovation in the everyday, as well as development of breakthrough ideas
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple simultaneous priorities with limited supervision
  • Experience executing projects using Agile methodologies (especially SAFe)
  • Basic understanding of insurance business and products desirable
  • Ability to engender enthusiasm for everything data, to motivate and influence adoption of new ideas and capabilities, and to communicate with excellent clarity, both in written and verbal forms

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with demonstrated expertise of data management and data governance practices, standards and services
