Position Summary

  • The Data Protection Lead is a novel role in the Chief Data Officer organization with the responsibilities to place data protection decisions and actions in a business context. The role will fulfill an important function as part of a broader Data Protection program in a partnership with Information Technology, Information Security, Operational Risk Management and various business organizations. In the near term, the Data Protection Lead will drive a pilot to identify and evaluate potential vulnerable sensitive data in select data sources. In the long term, the responsibilities will pivot towards expansion of the initial pilot, engaging business leaders in protection and remediation actions, and shaping the data protection strategy and tactical plans.

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a member of a leadership team to develop data strategy and provide distinct leadership to apply data governance principles and capabilities to facilitate protection of New York Life data assets
  • Be the point person from the Chief Data Officer’s team to engage Information Security, Compliance, Operational Risk Management, Office of the General Council, and Technology to collaboratively plan and execute a comprehensive data protection program
  •  Lead a team of 3-5 resources and utilize data governance technology (e.g. Informatica EDC) to scan a select set of complex data sources. Evaluate the results of data source scans with a special focus on sensitive data classes (Personal Identifying Information and Personal Health Information). 
  • Assess current levels of data protection including obfuscation of data fields and/or other controls. Document scan results and link with various business concepts (e.g. business terms, reports, processes) as represented in NYL’s enterprise catalog (e.g. Informatica AXON). Frequently engage with team leaders and regularly with the broader data security team to communicate findings
  • Develop policy and process controls as necessary to advance NYL’s ability to protect critical data assets
  • Engage directly with executive leaders/Data Governance Officers (VP and above), data scientists, analysts, data engineers, data stewards, data architects and modelers, and other subject matter experts as required to understand data in business context to help shape data strategy
  • Understand relevant external regulations, translate the impact to NYL business and influence data strategy to best position NYL to respond
  • Understand industry data management best practices and benchmarks, translate the impact to NYL business and influence data strategy
     

Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership of data management teams with a special emphasis on security and protection controls and risk mitigation
  • Demonstrated ability to place data in a business context and drive positive outcomes
  • Ability and persistence to analyze data , hypothesize cause and effect relationships, and solve complex, enterprise-wide problems
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of a broad set of data management technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively anticipate and adapt to change
  • Team-oriented and able to interact and collaborate with a diverse group of people
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and shape strategy
  • Direct experience with Informatica Axon, EDC, IDQ  or equivalent toolset is desirable
  • Deep understanding and application of regulations that impact financial and insurance business domains
  • Ability to engender enthusiasm for everything data, and communicate with excellent clarity, both in written and verbal forms
  • Expert level understanding of industry data management best practices and trends

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years with deep expertise and demonstrated leadership of data management and data governance practices, standards and services
