New York Life’s Office of the General Counsel seeks an experienced lawyer to join a team of lawyers responsible for providing day to day advice and counsel to the New York Life Group Benefit Solutions business segment.  The position will be responsible for providing counsel on ERISA, group insurance products, third party self-funded plan claim administration, and regulatory compliance. Other responsibilities may include advising on state and federal family/medical leave administration.  Demonstrated ability to assess ambiguity and risk and counsel internal business clients’ daily needs.  Working as part of a team, the Assistant General Counsel must understand and apply the law against current business goals and challenges and effectively deliver appropriate solution-oriented advice in a fast-paced environment.



Primary responsibilities include providing support as part of a team of lawyers for all aspects the New York Life Group Benefit Solutions business, including group disability, life and accident products, client account support, contract drafting and negotiation, state and federal family/medical leave and other specialized business projects.  The Assistant General Counsel will frequently interact with business managers/staff, employer-policyholders, and other OGC staff.  The Assistant General Counsel may manage outside counsel relationships related to their responsibilities.


The Assistant General Counsel must:

  • Drive tasks to conclusion and execute effectively alongside knowledgeable, experienced internal clients.
  • Operate both collaboratively with, and independently from, OGC colleagues.
  • Provide creative, proactive, customer-focused, solution-oriented advice to advance and protect business goals, risks and objectives.
  • Strive to identify opportunities and solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of OGC team interaction with the business and its delivery of legal advice.
  • Counsel, and collaboratively develop and drive to conclusion, new products and services necessary to support business segment goals.
  • Occasionally, engage and manage outside counsel and interact with regulators.
  • Adeptly balance and assess risk and ambiguity.



  • JD/Bar membership required.
  • Eight to ten years of overall experience, with a minimum of 5 years relevant in-house or law firm legal experience.
  • Subject matter knowledge from among the following areas preferred:  ERISA, group insurance, third party benefit administration, contracting.
  • This position requires a customer-focused approach to problem solving and the ability to efficiently manage a diverse workload.
  • Strong work ethic and excellent judgment.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation and communication skills.
