The Capital Management team within the Office of Chief Actuary is responsible for monitoring and reporting New York Life’s capital metrics and performing various analyses to better understand short- and long-term capital generation at the company, all of which are fundamental to our mission of providing long-term guarantees to policyholders.  We work closely with business unit and corporate finance teams to calculate and evaluate internal required capital, free surplus, and external Risk Based Capital (RBC), as well as to report on these metrics to senior management and the Board. 


This position could be located in either the NYC Home Office or the White Plains office.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Manage quarterly and year-end RBC calculation and filing process in collaboration with the Statutory Reporting team within Controllers
  • Maintain and update projections of RBC ratios by legal entity
  • Stay abreast of industry developments in the RBC framework and test/integrate any proposed changes to the methodology or factors
  • Assist in developing exhibits and commentary to communicate results and projections to senior management for both quarterly actual and plan projection periods
  • Collaborate with Investments and Accounting Strategy to evaluate internal/external capital treatment and impacts of new types of investments
  • Act as a key point-person to provide capital inputs for rating agencies and to other areas within the company, including Controllers, Asset-Liability Management, Investments, and Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Work with the Credit Risk team to review and validate annual asset risk factor update for internal capital
  • Develop and implement additional efficiencies in the way that the team collects and organizes various data inputs from around the company
  • Refresh capital reporting materials for subsidiary Board meetings and update dividend recommendations
  • Integrate new portfolios into capital calculations and reporting framework
  • Perform ad-hoc analyses and sensitivities on capital metrics



  • Strong experience with Excel and its various features, including working with large data sets and pivot tables
  • Familiarity with the following concepts/programs are useful but not critical:
    • Statutory accounting
    • WINGS Statutory filing software
    • Investments / investment accounting
    • Ledger
  • Strong analytical skills, desire to ask questions, and ability independently problem-solve
  • Strong written communication skills to effectively convey key results as well as to create and maintain documentation of our processes
  • Diligence and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under tight time pressure during quarterly/plan reporting periods
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to collaborate effectively with various areas within Finance
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing circumstances
