The Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDSAi) is the 70-person innovative corporate Analytics group within New York Life, led by Chief Analytics Officer Glenn Hofmann (https://www.linkedin.com/in/glennhofmann/). We are a rapidly growing entrepreneurial department which designs, creates, and offers innovative data-driven solutions for many parts of the enterprise. In the 7 years of the existence of CDSAi we have built a lot of predictive modeling solutions that are being used by various areas in the company. We have also stood up a modern model deployment platform that allows our models to be accessed in real time or batch (via APIs) from any production system in the company.
We are currently expanding our team of data scientist who work on geospatial data science products. The role reports to Marina Printz (https://www.linkedin.com/in/marina-printz), who currently leads the Marketing, Service and Geospatial Data Science team. A good understanding of predictive analytics (including the process of building and deploying models) and technology is essential.

Responsibilities
- Leads a geospatial practice within CDSAi. This includes use case development and associated stakeholder management in various business areas. It also means talent development, infrastructure and tooling (in collaboration with ML Ops and IT), education of stakeholders and community, vendor selection/collaboration and governance (in collaboration with model governance team and Legal).
- Independently leads geospatial data analysis projects from proof of value concept, design, business review meetings with internal and external clients deriving requirements/deliverables, reception, and processing of data, performing analyses, developing maps and mapping applications to final reports/presentations, communication of results and implementation support.
- Leads geospatial data scientists ensuring best in class methodologies and deliverables across the project lifecycle.
- Demonstrates to stakeholders how geospatial analytics can be implemented to maximize business benefits. Provides support, which includes strategic consulting, needs assessments, project scoping and the preparation/presentation of proposals.
- Drives the use of geospatial analytics within New York Life by active internal partnership management, discovering business opportunity and creating business value by executing on high-priority projects.
- Utilizes advanced geospatial / GIS techniques to create advanced and creative geospatial analyses and mapping applications to address business objectives and client needs.
- Works closely with business and technology partners in designing, building and implementing AI/data science solutions.
- Closely collaborates with data scientists on joined projects, and mentors data scientists on utilizing GIS methods and workflows.
- Proactively and effectively communicates in various verbal and written formats with internal stakeholders on product design, data specification and implementations of GIS projects.
- Partners with technology to problem solve technical issues within the ESRI ecosystem.
- Develops scripts and tools for managing data, including designing data standards, structures, forms, and reports within ESRI environment. Formats and generates a variety of GIS products including custom maps and mapping applications. Uses cartographic and design principles throughout the process.
- Maintains, updates and designs shapefiles, geodatabases, and metadata; Extracts, cleans, adjusts and converts data and information from non-GIS systems into GIS formats; Uses scripts, queries, and other tools to obtain and/or correct missing or incorrect spatial and attribute data.
- Stays abreast of new trends and technology in geospatial analytics and GIS applications, and insurance industry trends. Functions as the geo analytics expert in meetings with other internal areas and external vendors.
- Assures compliance with regulatory and privacy requirements during design and implementation of geospatial projects.
- Travels to events and vendor meetings as needed (< 10%).
Required qualifications.
- Graduate-level degree with concentration in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics, physics, or geography
- 10+ years of experience with geospatial analytics in financial services or insurance (preferred but not mandatory.
- 3+ years of direct people management experience. Proven ability to effectively manage own and associates’ time while multitasking between multiple, time-sensitive projects and competing priorities in a dynamic business environment while maintaining strong, productive relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners. Ability to provide technical guidance to direct reports.
- Experience in creating new brand-new geospatial solutions, taking them to production and working with stakeholders to adopt them into their practice.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills, listening and teamwork skills, and effective presentation skills. This is absolutely essential since you will have a lot of exposure to different internal groups (data, IT, Agency, Legal, government relations, etc.) as well as third-party data partners.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic and analytical leadership. Executive presence on high-level meetings. Credible functional expertise in geospatial analytics.
- Strong technical experience with the full ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, Business Analyst, etc.)
- Experience using Python to handle geospatial data, with ESRI and open-source libraries (e.g., geopandas, shapely)
- Experience in building geospatial dashboards and apps in ESRI.
- Proficiency in open-source platforms (Carto, PostgreSQL, QGIS, PostGIS, GeoServer, etc.) preferred.
- Experience with retail distribution networks as a plus (not required)
- Expertise in statistical modeling techniques such as linear/logistic regression, GLM, Deep Learning, tree-based models (Random Forests and GBM), cluster analysis, principal components, feature creation, and validation.
- Strong expertise in regularization techniques (Ridge, Lasso, elastic nets), variable selection techniques, feature creation (transformation, binning, high level categorical reduction, etc.) and validation (hold-outs, CV, bootstrap).
- Substantial programming experience with several of the following: Python, R, PySpark, TensorFlow and/or PyTorch, SQL, Hadoop. Exposure to GitHub, Domino Data Labs.
- Experience with data visualization (e.g., R Shiny, Spotfire, Tableau) is a plus.
- Proficiency in creating effective and visually appealing PowerPoint presentations.
