The Actuarial Data and Analysis (DnA) team within Actuarial Services seeks a competent Financial Data Administrator to assist with maintaining, growing, and improving the ways in which data generated from actuarial models is used and accessed.  The data leg of the DnA team maintains the data dimensions, mappings, and analytics performed on this data in support of Financial Reporting for all insurance products, lines of business, and accounting bases within the scope of New York Life.  This role will engage and partner with all business units to understand prospective needs and advise on approaches to better understand their business blocks. 

The Actuarial Services DnA team has re-architected and automated much of the underlying data and analytical infrastructure businesspeople use.  As these improvements go live and get adopted, as well as the growth in scale and scope of processes being subsumed by the DnA team continues, this role provides a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a data team that is both growing and paving the way to be leaders in how insurance companies use and consume data.



Responsibilities for this position place focus on the drive for continuous improvement from an operational perspective.  The candidate will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of our data mappings used in ETL processes as well as the analytical dimensions and drivers used in analysis, reporting, and studies associated with actuarial work for various blocks of business.  A sample of the projects the role encompasses, but is not limited to, is as follows: 

  • Promote changes from development server to production server upon review and approval of new solutions in support of evolving application, governance, and BI solution/reporting requirements
  • Partnering with Actuarial and Technology departments to ensure alignment and compatibility with ultimate goals and solutions regarding data
  • Ensure permissions granted to various teams aligns with governance to provide a "self-serve" environment for users to access their data
  • Work closely with Technology department to ensure that the documentation of solutions entails the flow, scope, and dependencies of the solution
  • Document the details of the solution, and how to properly interact with the self-service request forms
  • Interact with various stakeholders and team members to ensure solutions are fulfilling user requirements are efficiently designed and maintainable
  • Educate and train business and systems personnel in how to use and interact with data as needed
  • Provide expertise in trouble-shooting problems, taking appropriate actions to resolve or prevent future problems
  • Assist in after-hours implementation/production code moves/check outs as necessary



We are looking for someone with the following skill set:

  • Bachelor's degree specializing in computer science or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Suite – SSIS, SSMS, and SSAS
  • Experience with data warehouse development on MS SQL Server
  • Experience with the development of logical and physical data models
  • Experience with data partitioning, retention, and the appropriate uses thereof
  • Good knowledge of the SQL Server physical database design and management 
  • Execution and time management skills - ability to make progress on multiple fronts effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong aptitude for technology, especially data and data science


Preferred skills/experience:

  • 5+ years of data management or administration
  • Microsoft Certified for one of (prefer MCSA/MCSE):
    • Azure Data Engineer Associate
    • Azure Database Administrator Associate
    • MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration
    • MCSE: Data Management and Analytics
  • Knowledge of actuarial software and work-flows a plus
  • Knowledge of financial data; as software and work-flows a plus
  • Experience working within an actuarial enterprise technology environment a plus
  • Competency at translating technical language to non-technical customers
  • Experience with iterative changes and enhancements in solution life cycle processes
  • Demonstrable creativity and open-mindedness
  • A self-starter with strong communication skills
  • Excellent relationship building and collaboration skills 
  • An energetic team player
