The role of the Data Governace  Process Lead is to engage with teams in the Value Streams, Chief Data Office, Data Protection, Enterprise Data Management, and any other relevant organization currently defining Data Management and Governance processes to champion and facilitate the development and implementation of data governance operations and controls (e.g., data ownership & stewardship, data quality, data protection, 3rd party data management, business definition and information architecture, data curation and lineage, access control, environment management, etc.).

The role requires a deep knowledge of data management principles, their inter-dependencies, NYL's control frameworks, solid problem-solving skills, and practical communication skills. It also requires experience in process design, workflow implementation, and organizational change management. The role's success requires partnering with Senior Business and Data Leaders, Information Architects/Modelers, Engineers/Wranglers, Data Owners/Stewards, B.I. Solution Developers and other business and technical roles.   Essentially, the role is to translate processes designed on paper into tangible capabilities and workflows implemented in an operational framework.

The role requires managing a consulting resources and influence staffing of data governance functions for ongoing operations over the short to medium term.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with partners within data and business teams data organizations (BI/Analytics, Data Science, Technology, etc.),  lines of businesses, functions, and Value-Streams, Cyber-Security, Operational Risk, Privacy, and OGC, navigating the organization and figuring out who is needed to drive results. You will use your influence skills to establish a strong sense of working together towards a shared vision and goals.
  • Design and implement Data Governance Policies, Standards, Processes, Controls, and related Operating Procedures to advance data ownership/stewardship and manage Cloud environment
  • Partner with broader Technology, Cybersecurity, Risk, Audit, and Compliance teams to extend Data Protection, Cataloging and Data Quality metrics/goals across NYL high-risk environments
  • Represent data organization in internal audit reviews for broader organization and support threat assessment as required. Guide the internal audit of data programs and deliverables.
  • Partner with Risk teams to manage and reduce overall data ecosystem value at risk. Develop a strategy and roadmap to drive the reduction of risk.
  • Engage business leaders/staff and technology leaders/staff in an end-to-end data management process to understand and communicate data management capabilities to support solutions.
  • Engage business leaders/staff and technology leaders/staff in establishing robust data controls for the data creation and update and data entry and collection processes.
  • Support Data Quality Product Owners by maturing and establishing data quality processes for business-critical applications and data quality measures for critical data elements
  • Apply problem-solving techniques to determine business impact and strategic options.

Education / Training

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree; equivalent work experience accepted

Preferred:

  • MBA or Master's in Management of Technology; equivalent work experience accepted

Previous Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the data management and governance domain
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in defining and executing data governance policies and standards
  • Experience with the Enterprise Data Management Council's Cloud Data Management and Controls Framework (CDMC), an excellent working knowledge of industry data management frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK, EDMC's DCAM, CMMi-DMM, etc. Working knowledge of the NIST Framework is an advantage 
  • Experience in
    • Data Governance Solutions and Capabilities
    • Business Process Design/Reengineering, Lean Engineering, Six Sigma etc.
    • Solving problems of various low to high-complexity
    • Developing insights from the analysis of data
    • Making and delivering presentations to business and technical staff
    • Experience implementing or designing Service Centers or Helpdesks is desirable
    • Supporting change and managing transitions are highly desirable
    • The Insurance industry is highly desirable

  • Strong technical proficiency and demonstrated ability with data management technologies such as data quality profiling tools, data catalog, and master data management.
  • Comfortable with "unknowns" and able to figure out what must get done with the information available
  • Ability to perform essential project management functions such as project plan development and resource/time estimation of tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, communicate, build relationships, mentor, and influence a community of data professionals across lines of business and functional areas
  • Strong written, verbal, and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to work with all levels within the organization
  • Ability to tell a story through presentations, to motivate and influence the adoption of new ideas and capabilities
  • Awareness of relevant and emerging financial services/insurance data standards is a plus.
  • Familiarity with I.T. functions and services
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple simultaneous priorities
  • Ability to think end-to-end, connect moving parts, and anticipate and manage change impacts
  • Ability to define and leverage metrics to drive performance and outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of configuring and administering data catalogs, data glossaries, and data quality solutions is a plus
  • Working knowledge of M.S. Word, Excel, Vision, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with visualization tools like Tableau is desirable
  • Working knowledge of current and future information management technologies, trends, and applications

 

 

Salary range: $115,000-$175,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
