Derivative portfolio manager that will help oversee and enhance the use of derivatives across the general account portfolios.  The position will be part of New York Life’s Office of the Chief Investment Officer.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and manage derivative strategies across interest rate, equity, and foreign exchange markets
  • Translate business and investment needs to appropriate derivative overlay strategies that could be employed to enhance risk adjusted returns
  • Continuously evaluate value add market opportunities for potential implementation within regulatory and capital constraints
  • Closely coordinate with portfolio management, asset management and ALM teams, and communicate position, risk, and return positions and outlooks
  • Understand changes in regulations and market structure and advise potential actions that could be required
  • Ensure derivative portfolio and activity is within firm limits and guidelines


The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • 10+ years of broad experience in OTC derivatives markets with an insurer, asset manager or bank
  • Understanding of capital markets strategy, trading, valuation, and pricing for interest rate, equity, credit and FX derivatives
  • A proven ability to think independently and critically analyze detailed and complex information
  • Experience with Blackrock’s Aladdin or similar systems including Bloomberg, as well as internally-developed and vendor-provided tools for building analysis, attributions, what-if scenarios, etc
  • Ability to build confidence and trust of traders, operations and internal clients with straightforward and effective recommendations
  • Familiarity with derivatives legal, operation, and trading conventions
  • Ability to bring people together across investment teams in support of analyzing, reviewing and ultimately executing on investment opportunities
  • Ability to navigate and work effectively in a large, matrixed organization with multiple decision-makers and stakeholders
  • B.A. or advanced degree, concentration on the following preferred: Applied math, Economics, Accounting/Business; M.B.A finance
