New York Life is seeking an experienced individual disability income (IDI) insurance underwriter.  As one of the first members of the IDI underwriting team, the IDI Underwriter will have the unique opportunity to help develop underwriting processes and procedures and ultimately underwrite a new line of business for New York Life.  New York City is the preferred location for this position.



  • Accurately and efficiently evaluate the morbidity risk of proposed insureds based on medical, occupational, and financial information to determine whether applications should be approved, modified, or declined. according to company guidelines
  • Underwrite risks of varying complexity and coverage amounts
  • Consult with medical directors and IDI Underwriting management as needed
  • Effectively articulate underwriting decisions and negotiate appeals of underwriting actions
  • Coordinate with third party administrator to meet, or exceed turn-around times
  • Underwrite in-force changes, coverage increases, and reinstatements in accordance with guidelines
  • Assist with auditing individual cases per guidelines
  • Perform peer reviews based on coverage amounts and/or underwriting outcome
  • Work with reinsurance partners to negotiate and secure risk classification for cases that exceed morbidity standards, are above retention, or to secure a more competitive offer
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of our administrative systems, product rules, underwriting guidelines, and medical, financial, and occupational developments impacting morbidity
  • Actively participate in projects that contribute to department and corporate goals
  • Assist with developing and mentoring associate underwriters
  • Participate in training and development opportunities



  • Bachelor’s degree required; industry related education (DIA, LOMA) desired
  • 7+ years of experience in disability/ IDI underwriting
  • Knowledge of IDI insurance products and processes, medical terminology and   how various medical impairments interact and effect individual morbidity risk
  • Excellent analytical skills, written and verbal communications, and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others to solve complex problems, use analytical thought to make good decisions and identify innovative solutions
  • Work effectively within a team environment, as well as independently
  • General computer proficiency required
