Lead efforts to develop, commercialize, and oversee alternative investment strategies that enhance the general account asset allocation and investment performance.  The position will be part of New York Life’s Office of the Chief Investment Officer. 


Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the portfolio management of alternative investments and strategies across traditional and emerging fixed income, equity, and fund asset classes , including portfolio construction, opportunity targeting and existing position monitoring
  • Coordinate the development of alternative strategies through detailed analysis of fundamental drivers of value and risk/capital adjusted returns
  • Drive new idea generation and oversee activities that enhance balance sheet optimization from a capital and risk capacity perspective
  • Manage direct deal flow execution across transaction life cycle, including origination, diligence, negotiation, closing, and monitoring
  • Ensure alternative investments are properly executed in the context of developed strategies, and dynamically manage alternative allocation in the context of market conditions, business needs, risk assessments, etc
  • Liaise with internal and external asset managers to monitor existing positions and generate new idea and transaction flow
  • Coordinate with internal teams to determine appropriate application of balance sheet metrics including required capital and risk capacity measures to alternative portfolios and specific investments
  • Prepare and present investment recommendations and ongoing portfolio performance attribution to senior management
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential strategic partners to enhance transaction sourcing


The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Track record of developing, analyzing and executing alternative investment opportunities both on a standalone basis and in a portfolio context
  • Understanding of insurance general account investing and portfolio approach, including balance sheet, capital, and risk constraints
  • Knowledge of activity, strategies and solutions applied by various investor types that could be leveraged in an insurance portfolio management context
  • A proven ability to think independently and critically analyze detailed and complex information
  • Intellectual curiosity and an ability to make thoughtful and timely observations to identify risks and opportunities
  • Ability to bring people together across investment teams in support of analyzing, reviewing and ultimately executing on investment opportunities
  • Ability to navigate and work effectively in a large, matrixed organization with multiple decision-makers and stakeholders
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in finance or business); CFA, MBA, CAIA preferred




Salary range: $200,000 - $300,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
