New York Life, the largest writer of retail life insurance in the U.S. and a top player in annuities, long-term care and mutual funds, is seeking a Data Science Product Manager in its Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDSAi).

 

The company has 177 years of history and while usable data does not quite go back that far, we have a wealth of internal information on consumers, policies and their performance, as well as applicants, prospects and our 12,000 agents. We also have a multitude of external data from a great variety of sources. Analytical challenges range from mortality risk to agent recruiting decisions, service optimization, consumer analytics (segmentation, response, conversion, retention, up-sell), fraud detection, advertising allocation and office footprint optimization.

 

The Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDSAi) is the 60-person innovative corporate Analytics group within New York Life, led by Chief Analytics Officer Glenn Hofmann (https://www.linkedin.com/in/glennhofmann/). In the 6 years of the existence of CDSAi we have built a lot of predictive modeling solutions that are being used by various areas in the company. We have also stood up a modern model deployment platform that allows our models to be accessed in real time or batch (via APIs) from any production system in the company.

 

We have now reached a level of maturity where have an established model development life cycle with established project standards, and have added essential roles such as Product Managers and a full ML Engineering team. The Program manager will collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Business Partners and our Engineering team to execute our model development life cycle and prepare our models for production deployment. Once ready for deployment, the Program Manager will work across the Enterprise to engage a number of stakeholders, oversee several workstreams and collaborate with Technology, Business Partner end users and the ML Ops team for deployment and final delivery of a finished product. This role will report to Yue Cheng (https://www.linkedin.com/in/yue-cheng-069253a/) who leads our Program Management team.

 

 

Responsibilities

 Manage internal and external relationships for the Center for Data Science and artificial intelligence. This is a key role for managing the end to end of analytics projects from ideation to deployment.

  • Work with business partners from one or more of the following areas: Underwriting, Actuarial, Service and Marketing.

  • Coordinate with Procurement, Legal, Technology, Finance, and a variety of external data suppliers to move analytical solutions into core business processes.

  • Partner with other program managers on the use of standardized tools to improve project delivery.

  • Partner with Technology team to oversee implementations from the Analytics side. Resolves problems and removes obstacles to timely and high-quality deployment.

  • Create business cases/project charter with value propositions, budget planning, and stakeholder management/communication planning etc.

  • Organize a highly effective cross-functional working teams with key work streams staffed by team members from related functional areas

  • Create project plans, develop, and execute strategies for internal coordination, including brainstorming events, focus groups, field visits, update meetings, steering committees.

  • Manage project governance, and effectively communicate project status to senior management on a regular basis

  • Create and present effective and visually appealing presentation materials.

  • Travel to events and vendor meetings as needed (< 10%).

 

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, with strong leadership skills and executive presence

  • Collaborative work style with ability to effectively interact with and earn trust of across the organization

  • Ability to influence and lead cross-functional team in the realization of project goals and time-bound deliverables

  • Analytical mindset, aptitude for working on a team with highly technical data scientists, data architects and/or IT experts.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and multi-task essential; must be very organized and have excellent follow-up and problem-solving skills

  • Strong Excel and Power point skills required

  • Outstanding judgment, critical thinking, time management, communication and writing skills

 

Experience:

  • 5-8 years of experience in the Life, Health, or P&C insurance industry, preferably in Data Science program management.

  • 2+ years of experience managing and executing the product development cycle, ideally coordinating programs in large insurance or financial services organizations.

  • BS/BA in business and/or quantitative discipline, PMP preferred 

  • Experience effectively motivating and coordinating cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment to achieve well-defined timelines and goals

  • Business-level understanding of analytics

Salary range: $115,000-$175,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt
