This position is in New York Life's Office of the General Counsel, located in Manhattan, NY, with periodic opportunities to work in New York Life’s White Plains, NY office. The role is designed to support the group of attorneys handling legal work on issues related to the Company’s retail annuity and variable life insurance businesses, as well as certain annuity and life insurance products offered in institutional markets.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop a detailed understanding of how variable and fixed life insurance and annuity products are structured, and the laws and regulations relating thereto
  • Interact with various business departments, and attend meetings on behalf of the Office of the General Counsel
  • Assist attorneys with SEC filings
  • Work with outside financial printer to coordinate and Edgarize SEC filings
  • Assist with legal research related to insurance regulatory matters
  • Keep physical files updated, and update file index accordingly
  • Periodically archive materials pursuant to record retention policies
  • Assist with contracts and amendments to contracts with third parties
  • Assist attorneys with tracking regulatory proposals impacting life insurance and annuities
  • Maintain list of underlying funds available for each variable insurance product
  • Maintain list of legal and business contacts for all underlying funds
  • Prepare drafts of prospectus supplements
  • Prepare drafts, and coordinate filings, of Separate Account Plans of Operations
  • Prepare drafts, and coordinate filings, of required state securities filings
  • Proofread and edit documents
  • Assist attorneys with policyholder complaint resolution

 

Job Requirements

  • College degree required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to build relationships
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments while delivering consistent, quality work-product in a timely manner
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail; ability to work with complex disclosure documents
  • Strong work ethic and ability to self-start; on-the-job learner
  • Team-oriented individual with flexible and cooperative attitude

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in insurance and/or securities law
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and seek guidance when necessary
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong research and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment
  • Strong computer skills including latest versions of MS Office Suite,  electronic document management (such as iManage), and  WorkshareCompare,
  •  OneSumX/NILS and Westlaw
  • Experience with outside financial printers to coordinate and prepare SEC filings; experience with ArcPro is a plus
