Senior Associate - Developer Engineer

 

Location Designation: Hybrid - 3 days per week 

 

 

Role Overview

New York Life is seeking a highly motivated and forward-thinking Senior Associate –Developer Engineer to join our technology organization. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who combines deep mainframe expertise with modern software engineering practices and a passion for continuous learning.

As a senior member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting business-critical applications that span mainframe and distributed platforms. You will contribute to solution architecture, influence technical design decisions, and partner with architects, product teams, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure, and resilient solutions aligned with enterprise technology strategies.

The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on development experience in mainframe technologies while demonstrating the ability and willingness to learn emerging technologies, cloud-native platforms, AI-enabled development tools, and full-stack engineering practices. This role offers opportunities to expand beyond traditional mainframe development and become a versatile technology professional capable of contributing across multiple platforms and domains.

What You'll Do:

Application Development & Engineering

· Design, develop, test, enhance, and maintain enterprise applications supporting critical business capabilities.

· Develop and support solutions utilizing PL1, ASM, COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, MQ, and other mainframe technologies.

· Develop and support solutions utilizing Angular/.net, CICS API, Mulesoft, Lambda, Python, AWS technologies

· Participate in the development of APIs, services, and integration solutions that expose mainframe functionality to modern digital platforms.

· Contribute to full-stack application development efforts, including user interfaces, middleware services, APIs, and backend systems.

· Perform root cause analysis, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and production support activities.

· Ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for reliability, security, maintainability, and scalability.

Solution Architecture & Technical Design

· Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to end-to-end solution designs.

· Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.

· Evaluate design alternatives and make informed technical recommendations based on business needs, risk, cost, and long-term maintainability.

· Create and maintain technical design documents, data flow diagrams, integration specifications, and architecture artifacts.

· Support modernization initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve legacy applications and reduce technical debt.

· Collaborate with enterprise and domain architects to ensure alignment with technology standards and strategic road maps.

Mainframe Modernization & Cloud Enablement

· Support initiatives that modernize mainframe applications through APIs, event-driven architectures, microservices, and cloud integration patterns.

· Contribute to hybrid-cloud solutions that integrate mainframe workloads with AWS and other cloud platforms.

· Participate in application migration assessments, modernization planning, and implementation activities.

· Leverage cloud-native services where appropriate to improve scalability, resiliency, and operational efficiency.

· Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend modernization approaches that maximize business value.

Full-Stack & Cross-Platform Engineering

· Expand technical expertise beyond mainframe technologies into distributed systems, cloud platforms, integration technologies, and front-end development frameworks.

· Develop and support RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven integrations.

· Contribute to web-based application development using modern frameworks and engineering practices.

· Collaborate with engineering teams to deliver end-to-end business capabilities.

· Build reusable components and promote engineering best practices across platforms.

DevOps, Automation & Quality Engineering

· Build, utilize and support CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, and DevSecOps practices.

· Utilize source control, automated testing, code quality tools, and deployment automation frameworks.

· Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational excellence practices.

· Participate in Agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.

· Promote automation and continuous improvement throughout the software development lifecycle.

· Demonstrate curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies, platforms, and engineering disciplines.

· Pursuing opportunities to become cross-skilled across mainframe, cloud, integration, and full-stack technologies.

· Stay current with industry trends, including cloud computing, AI-assisted development, automation, and modern architecture patterns.

· Contribute to innovation initiatives and technology proof-of-concepts.

What You'll Bring:

Required Qualifications

· 7+ years of experience developing and supporting enterprise applications on IBM Mainframe platforms.

· Strong experience with PL1, ASM, COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, MQ, and batch processing environments.

· Experience with Angular/.net, CICS API, Mulesoft, Lambda, Python & AWS technologies

· Experience participating in technical design and solution architecture discussions.

· Knowledge of software engineering principles, application lifecycle management, and SDLC best practices.

· Experience with API-based integrations and distributed system architectures.

· Understanding of Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines.

· Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

· Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changing business and technology needs.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience in integrating mainframe applications with cloud platforms such as AWS.

· Experience with Java, Spring Boot, Node.js, Python, or similar modern development technologies.

· Exposure to front-end development frameworks such as React, Angular, or similar technologies.

· Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, Kafka, messaging platforms, and API gateways.

· Experience with Infrastructure as Code and cloud-native deployment models.

· Experience in financial services, insurance, wealth management, or related industries.

· Experience with Generative AI, automation platforms, and modern software delivery practices.

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, MIS, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

 

Pay Transparency

Salary Range: $100,000-$143,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No 

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
