Senior Director/Director -Research & Development
Location Designation: Hybrid - 3 days per week
Reports to: Head of Business Development / Managing Director
Job Description:
The Research & Development Senior Director/Director will lead the R&D efforts aimed at executing fundamental analysis and developing innovative investment products across capital markets for the general account of New York Life. The primary goal is to enhance the investment origination funnel and portfolio performance by widening the investable universe while working within asset allocation targets and other portfolio objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of investment strategies, specifically within the context of insurance general account investing, in structured and private markets, and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identification & Investment Strategy:
- Identify scalable investment opportunities by developing and executing fundamental analysis across various asset classes, focusing on value creation and efficiency.
- Work with investment teams to create and implement innovative investment strategies to optimize portfolio performance and return on capital.
- Collaboration and Alignment:
- Collaborate with Portfolio Management and other OCIO teams to understand general account goals, constraints, and investment objectives.
- Work with Business Development to source investment opportunities and innovative structures.
- Analytical Framework Development:
- Develop a comprehensive analytical framework to evaluate investment opportunities, focusing on nascent markets and emerging investment strategies.
- Utilize OCIO Portfolio Solutions to create a relative value framework for analyzing and prioritizing investment opportunities, while aligning with internal team capabilities.
- Investment Opportunity Evaluation:
- While sourcing investment opportunities, conduct market and regulatory research, and assess innovative structures for inclusion in investment analysis.
- Evaluate and prioritize investment opportunities, presenting findings to investment teams, Portfolio Management, and Business Development through a collaborative process.
- Communication and Presentation:
- Present investment strategies, research findings, and recommendations to senior management and other stakeholders.
- Engage in an iterative and collaborative process with investment teams to refine strategies and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or a related field. Advanced degrees (MBA, CFA, CAIA) are preferred.
- Experience:
- Extensive experience in insurance general account investing, with a strong understanding of balance sheet management, capital, and risk constraints.
- Proven ability to develop and implement innovative investment strategies across multiple asset classes, with a focus on private assets and complex structures.
- Experience in leading research and development initiatives from inception to execution, demonstrating an ability to think independently and innovatively.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with a track record of developing comprehensive analytical frameworks for investment evaluation.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely to senior management and other stakeholders.
- High level of intellectual curiosity and the ability to make well-reasoned, thoughtful arguments.
- Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively across different teams and build consensus.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in cross-asset financial modeling, quantitative analysis, and the use of investment analysis software.
Familiarity with market research tools and regulatory environments impacting insurance investment strategies
Pay Transparency
Salary Range: $165,000-$225,000
Overtime eligible: Exempt
Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes
Sales bonus eligible: No
Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
