This position is in New York Life's Office of the General Counsel, located in Manhattan, NY, with the opportunity to work in New York Life’s White Plains, NY office.  The role will collaborate in resolving claims and service matters related to the Company’s life insurance and annuities products.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Review state laws concerning the requirements, rights and duties of fiduciaries under powers of attorney, guardianships, trusts and estates
  • Evaluate claims and service issues for life insurance policies and annuities involving the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act, divorce decrees, revocations and disclaimers
  • Analyze fact patters and discuss options for resolution with business partners, policy owners and attorneys
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the claims process for life insurance, annuity, long-term care and disability products, and the service processes for administering those products and handling client requests
  • Interact with various business departments, and attend meetings on behalf of the Office of the General Counsel
  • Assist with legal research related to insurance matters
  • Assist with policy owner complaint resolution

Job Requirements

Required Skills:

  • College degree required
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships with other business departments
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments while delivering consistent, quality work-product in a timely manner
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic and ability to self-start
  • Team-oriented with flexible and collaborative attitude
    Preferred Skills:
  • 2-4 years’ experience in insurance and/or trusts and estates law, or equivalent experience supporting an insurance service or claims operation in compliance matters, complaints, appeals or quality assurance
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and seek guidance when necessary
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong research and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment
  • Strong computer skills including latest versions of MS Office Suite, NILS and Westlaw
