Job Title: Tech Lead (Data)–New York Life Ventures, New York Life

 

Job Description

We are looking for a Tech Lead (Data) who will be responsible for design/development of enterprise and platform-specific data architectures with primary responsibility for data sourcing, data integration, data modeling in alignment with architecture to ensure platform meet the needs of business users, and/or internal end user applications. You will review the current data landscape and architecture and work closely with cloud architect and various IT groups to establish standardize database inventory. You will analyze enterprise data and business requirements and incorporating them into the reference architecture’s design and implementation, define enterprise Data Policy and Standards, create and develop reliable, scalable data solutions that ensure the collection of clean and consistent data from the multiple data sources, and will be the subject matter expert on new data integration methodologies and implementations. You will also be responsible for the evaluation of key attributes of existing application, evolution and enhancements to the data model/schema of cloud-based technology stack and will work with other engineers to define and execute strategies.

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work with product owners and team members to build industry-leading solutions
  • Participate as a team member in planning the architecture and development of solutions
  • Design and build the next-generation of Insurance applications in the cloud
  • Research and identify best practices both from an overall Data Architecture
  • Troubleshoot issues and work with team to identify and address problems
  • Participate in SCRUM teams working on bi-weekly sprints and ensure on time delivery with high quality
  • Participating fully in the development process through the entire software lifecycle
  • As a Technical Lead for Data, responsible for all data related aspects in NYLV R&D lab
  • Work with technology and business stakeholders to understand problems / pain areas, assess the current state gaps, visualize target state solution
  • Define high level solution and recommendations for future state architecture
  • Gathering of tactical and strategic requirements for data integration and data warehouse/ data lake, data preparation, data visualization
  • Develop conceptual & logical data models for data platforms
  • Define and document data transformation rules
  • Assist other team leads / team members from data perspective
  • Build a team of hands on data engineers to work on latest data technologies, Cloud, Big Data etc.
  • Work with Enterprise Data team and other central teams to align with organization’s standards around data modeling and data governance

 

 

Basic Qualifications / Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields. 
  • 7+ years of industry experience as a Data Architect/Data Engineer/Data Analyst.
  • Extensive hands on data warehousing and Business Intelligence experience as either Data or Solution Architect.
  • In-depth knowledge of data related best practices for Architecture, Transformation, Business Intelligence or Analytics.
  • Experience in data modeling and understanding of business data in Insurance/Investments will be preferred.
  • Solid understanding of agile application development methodologies and release management activities.
  • Contribute to the team’s ability to make and deliver on their commitments.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to both technical and business teams.
  • Strong analytical skills and analytical thinking is needed.

 

 

 

 

 

Technical Skills

 

  • 7+ years hands on knowledge of Data Models, Data Integration and ETL tools.
  • 4+ years of experience working with Hadoop, NoSQL DBs, HBase, Hive, Pig, etc. 
  • 4+ years of experience leading development of a modern data architecture in NoSQL dbs.
  • Experience standing up a data lake/warehouse in a private cloud environment is desirable.
  • Experience building both real time and batch-oriented solutions using services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), S3, NoSQL Databases, DynamoDB, Elastic Map Reduce (EMR), Kinesis, Redshift, and Relational Database Service (RDS) will be preferred.
  • Experience designing and implementing production databases (RDS or NoSQL).
  • Good understanding of S3 and associated technologies; hands-on experience in designing/implementing highly optimized, multi-tenant and secure S3 data stores and interaction services.
  • Experience using Atlassian tools set: Jira, Confluence.
  • Experience with Test Driven Development methodology.
  • Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases.
  • Knowledge of agile software development practices and release management.
  • Experience with ETL processes is a strong plus
  • Ability to write just enough documentation
  • Familiarity with commonly used services on AWS
  • Strong analytical skills and analytical thinking is needed
