Within the Life Insurance Industry, Underwriting is the critical foundation of the company which evaluates and assesses the risk of each applicant. As such, the Underwriting department which sits within Strategic Capabilities at New York Life, is an instrumental contributor to the long-term financial strength that New York Life has experienced through its 175-year history. The Underwriting Communication and Management team lies at the heart of Underwriting and provides consultative, strategic and tactical support to the Underwriting organization which includes the Head of Underwriting, the Chief Underwriter, the Chief Medical Director, the Life Insurance underwriting teams including Long Term Care and Individual Disability Insurance, Operations, Reinsurance and Risk Insights. This team drives the continual spirit of innovation within Underwriting through change management, fostering strong relationships and, essentially, being an influencer for this vast and highly important department.

 

As an Underwriting Change Communications Senior Associate, you will be responsible for supporting Underwriting through employee engagement and change management planning and communications. Through these efforts, you will need to weave in messaging on our strategic goals and how individual employees fit into these broader objectives. The means of communication range from formal memos and presentations to blog posts on our Corporate Intranet.

 

In this role, will you also be responsible for establishing and maintaining a broad annual communication plan, managing and executing various meetings throughout the year, including setting agendas and giving guidance on meeting content. You will also be involved in assessing change impact of several Underwriting initiatives and developing execution plans which are focused on our employees and partners. You will work closely with the Underwriting Leadership team to enable and support the achievement of business goals and key strategic initiatives. You will also work closely with other departments such as Strategic Initiatives, our Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance, Technology, Service and Agency, among many others. You will develop and collaborate on change management to help drive new initiatives across the organization as well as communication and training plans for both ongoing and upcoming projects.

 

To truly get things done, you will need the ability to form strong relationships across the company. You will need a keen attention to detail, strong planning and organization skills and you’ll have to quickly gain in depth business knowledge.  In addition, you’ll need to be comfortable working with senior management to execute on the delivery of both day-to-day priorities and longer-term goals and projects.  You’ll have the opportunity to use your creativity for ideas to drive adoption of new initiatives. In your role, you will be a part of all new and innovative projects within Underwriting and you will have the satisfaction of seeing the impact that you personally have made in moving these projects through.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Coordinate projects and/or commitments directly for the Leadership team
  • Lead planning efforts and manage agendas for meetings (staff, town hall, site visits, etc.)
  • Create change management strategy and execute on plans for initiatives
  • Create communication plans and provide content for various vehicles such as corporate intranet, emails and talking points
  • Provide full logistical planning and support for change management and related events and meetings
  • Support the delivery and execution of change management programs through development, implementation and analysis
  • Provide post-event analysis and identification of improvement opportunities. Recommend solutions to improve programs and develop as needed
  • Preparation of executive reports and presentations to a variety of audiences/constituents
  • Develop programs and processes supporting department strategy
  • Represent department in cross functional groups
  • Involved in a wide variety of tasks (ad-hoc projects or business demands which arise)
  • Collaborate with key partners in multiple business areas such as Technology, Strategic Solutions, Data Science, Data Solutions, Strategy, Service, Marketing, and Agency

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Experience with change management processes and communications
  • Proven strong written communication skills
  • Proven ability to develop a story though communication plans and PowerPoint presentations
  • 5+ years of related experience with strong business acumen
  • Highly organized and efficient
  • Creative talent for storytelling in business
  • Strong interpersonal, listening and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish work through others
  • Project Management experience a plus
  • Proficient at using all Microsoft office products with the ability to create professional presentations and develop messaging around business strategies and initiatives
