The Corporate Vice President (CVP) lead for Underwriting Learning and Development (L&D) has two distinct responsibilities. First, the CVP is responsible for leading and managing a team of three trainers and providing material for and delivering effective training to the production Underwriting team. Second, the CVP is responsible for the design, ongoing maintenance, and updating content for the Knowledge Management (KM) portal which houses New York Life’s Retail Life Underwriting Manual. This role can be based out of the following locations: New York Home Office, Duluth, GA; Cleveland, OH; or Dallas, TX.

 

Main Duties

  • Manage relationships with Underwriting leadership and Underwriting teams associated with Individual Life (IL), Individual Disability Income (IDI), and Long Term Care (LTC) lines of business.
  • Manage and lead a team of three Underwriting trainers (two Officers and one Senior Associate) and provide support and guidance to Underwriting Zone Trainers.
  • Build, deploy and maintain a robust and comprehensive approach to training new and experienced Underwriters,
  • Support training efforts and development of underwriting training curriculum for IL, IDI, LTC, and the Strategic Solutions Group.
  • Deliver effective training to the Underwriting team for the new underwriting platform (ALIP) and the new rules engine (AURA).
  • Support efforts associated with housing and maintaining Underwriting manuals, procedures, and processes for IL, IDI, and LTC.
  • Provide Continuing Education (CE), e-learning, and training sessions for new underwriting requirements, procedures, processes, or initiatives.
  • Drive the effectiveness of future training and aid in the development of the Underwriting team through the use of data capture and analysis.
  • Along with other members of the Learning & Development training team, serve as coach to, advocate for, and visible leader within the Underwriting Learning & Development team.
  • Design and maintenance of Knowledge Management (KM) system where the Retail Life Underwriting manual is housed.
  • Research and provide timely and clear updates for the Underwriting Manual in coordination with the Chief Medical Director and the Chief Underwriter.
  • Collaborate with Medical Director team to deliver medical lectures, Attending Physician Assessment training, Electrocardiograph screening/interpretation classes, and create appropriate test material and test protocol.
  • Partner with members of Communication and Change Management teams to ensure seamless change and effective communication.
  • Build upon an already strong feedback loop and synergies with the Underwriting Quality Control team.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5+ years of insurance industry experience required
  • 2+ years managing a team of direct reports required
  • 2+ years leadership experience required
  • 2+ years as a trainer required
  • Underwriting experience preferred, but not required
  • Must demonstrate strong communication, business writing, negotiation, influencing, and change management skills
