Position Summary

  • Underwriting is rapidly evolving to reflect improvements in data availability and technology platforms, as well as the integration of predictive modeling techniques.  We are undertaking several strategic initiatives to improve purchase experience, efficiency, and mortality.

 

  • The Senior Associate is a member of the Risk Insights team within the Underwriting Department of Strategic Capabilities.  His/her primary focus is to develop, maintain and refine analytical tools supporting Underwriting-related metrics. On an ongoing basis, the individual will help monitor and communicate key metrics generated by several strategic Underwriting innovation programs, including a self-service application platform and mortality prediction models. He/she will assist in the team’s effort to identify trends and thoroughly investigate and research any concerning or unexpected activity.  As Underwriting transitions to a new platform in 2022 and continues to pursue new capabilities, she/he will be expected to help ensure the organization is on track to meet its objectives.

 

  • This individual will work extensively with other members of the Risk Insights team and Underwriting at large. She/he will also work with adjacent teams in Strategic Capabilities (e.g., Strategic Solutions, Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) and functions (e.g., Technology, Finance) as needed.  There will be various opportunities to interact with senior management, including forums such as Underwriting Innovation Pod and Underwriting Rules Committee.

 

Responsibilities

  • Duties and responsibilities
    • Lead the creation and utilization of analytical tools (e.g., dashboards) that transform data into actionable insight
    • Assess business requirements for analytics and reporting and determine the best sources and types of data to fulfill requirements
    • Cleary and concisely articulate in written and verbal communication to ensure that developed metrics and reports align with initiative goals
    • Expected to gain a thorough understanding of the business, and make recommendations for additional reviews where there may be gaps, or suggest changes to programs to better achieve goals
    • Adjust metrics/tracking to align with new data sets and/or as the programs change over time
  • Technical experience
    • Has a familiarity with data analytical tools and the creation of presentation material
  • Business knowledge
    • Understand key business drivers of new business for life insurance. 
    • Develop an understanding of underwriting business processes and applications.
  • Leadership skills
    • Will work independently and as part of a broader team.
    • Will provide insight into the key trends identified, individual policy or transaction review as necessary, and recommend opportunities for improvement and potential solutions.   
  • Decision making/nature of impact
    • Will be required to collaborate with Underwriting management and other teams to create and implement action plans to strengthen reporting and monitoring capabilities. 
    • This role has a direct impact on the success of the business unit and the company by ensuring that management decisions are based on accurate and timely information.
  • Communication skills
    • It is critical to the success of this role to have strong communication skills to ensure that solutions align with requested assignments
    • Ability to "dig deeper" to ensure that requested information will illuminate the business problem and provide sufficient actionable information

 

Experience

  • Strong data analysis aptitude.
  • Ability to see the big picture and explain results.
  • Strong sense of ownership and ability to manage projects independently.
  • Experience and a strong background with PowerPoint and Excel required.
  • Prior experience wtih Business Intelligence/Visualization tools (e.g., Spotfire, Tableau) required.
  • Prior insurance experience (product, underwriting and/or service) preferred.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree
  • 2+ years of experience required
