Position Summary

The Senior Associate, Underwriting (UW) Rules Configurator is an inaugural member of the newly launched Underwriting Rules Automation Team, working adjacent to our Business Analysts (BAs) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Teams. The Underwriting Rules Configurator will play a critical role in the ongoing implementation for our low-code, configuration-based Automated Underwriting and Risk Analysis (AURA) toolset, which is an RGA product.  The AURA toolset is a software development platform employing visual interfaces with basic logic and programmable capabilities, which then produces underwriting decisions within our production platform.

Working under the direction of the Corporate Vice President of UW Rules Automation within the Strategic Solutions Group (SSG), you will have a direct role in New York Life’s Underwriting Modernization, which has a tremendous impact on our Company.


Key Responsibilities/Qualifications:

  • Working with directly with manager and teammate on analysis, and mapping of requirements to configure new rulesets or enhance existing rulesets, working in 2-week sprints, and executing 8 releases per year
  • Ownership of rule configuration stories from assigning and analysis of story, configuration, In-Sprint QA testing, and validation of UAT results
  • Assists in review of Quality Control validation of AURA’s production results, taking ownership of fixes along with teammates
  • Close collaboration with key stakeholders, including Product Owner, Business Analysts, Tech Lead, Project Manager, QA Lead, UAT Team, and Design Lead
  • Grow understanding/aptitude for Life Insurance Underwriting and New York Life’s internal underwriting rules and guidelines
  • Strong communication and analytical skills, communicating difficult concepts and influencing others to adopt a different point of view
  • Understanding of Scaled Agile framework, Scrum ceremonies (PI events, Sprint planning, Daily standups requiring individuals to report status), as well as researching and solving for defects raised during In-Sprint QA testing
  • Interprets business challenges around AURA, putting forth recommendations for best practices
  • Collaborates with others to solve complex problems related to configuration
  • Uses sophisticated analytical thought and education and/or equivalent experience to exercise judgement to identify innovative solutions when encountering challenges
  • Makes decisions that have cross-functional impact
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience
  • Participate in base product enhancement discussions and demos with Vendor



  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 5-7 years’ experience in with configuration of equivalent/similar low-code technologies and Agile practices and methodologies, knowledge of Agile tools such as JIRA preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Excellent understanding of development concepts and SDLC methodologies
  • Ability to meet targets and deadlines 
  • Ability to work closely on a team
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority on cross functional teams, as well as work individually  
  • Experience with Life Insurance Underwriting preferred, but not required
  • Experience with RGA’s AURA rules maintenance and disclosure maintenance (RMT & DMT) or equivalent rules engine (such as Magnum, Reflex, UnderwriteMe, Velogica, etc) toolset preferred, but not required



Salary range: $90,000-$135,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes
