Position Summary

Underwriting Quality Control (UW QC) was established in May 2014. Its goals are to gain assurance that Underwriting utilizes best practices, adheres to company guidelines, follows regulations, and that policies are issued with accurate ratings at the best offer possible. Additionally, UW QC evaluates consistency across all underwriting locations and results are utilized to evaluate Underwriters’ performance, assess training needs, update the Underwriting Manual, and suggest system enhancements.

 

This position is for the lead of the UW QC team, at the CVP/Manager level. One of his/her primary focuses will be to look for ways to improve the quality of NYL underwriting, in collaboration with Underwriting management. He or she will manage and oversee several Underwriters reviewing both Life and Long-Term Care underwritten cases daily. The UW QC lead will also be responsible for regular reporting on Life and Long-Term Care quality data metrics, which is used by senior management to evaluate performance. He or she will also coordinate targeted underwriting reviews and special projects with various stakeholders when needed.

 

Additionally, the UW QC team is currently supporting Underwriting’s goal of transitioning to a new underwriting software platform, ALIP. This project will require the UW QC team lead to coordinate across different business areas and teams, documenting issues and assisting with remediation where appropriate.

Throughout these projects, the UW QC team lead will collaborate with colleagues at all levels across the Underwriting organization, including senior management.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and help implement ways to improve the quality of NYL underwriting for both Life and Long-Term Care.
  • Oversee daily real-time and post issue reviews of underwritten cases.
  • Complete referrals on cases with findings and work with Underwriting management on any issues or remediation needed.
  • Generate reporting and analytics on QC UW findings and observations to be used in underwriting performance metrics.
  • Complete targeted underwriting reviews on select individuals to help assess underwriter ability.
  • Help analyze the replacement of Attending Physician Statements with Digital Health Data.
  • Assist with transition to ALIP software, including testing changes in model and production, and reporting and monitoring defects and change requests.
  • Oversee the validation of underwriting rules in ALIP, including reporting to UW management on the resulting rule accuracy rate.
  • Establish a quality review process for Individual Disability Insurance.
  • Assist with special projects and analyses as needed.
  • Promote a strong partnership with Underwriting leadership.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders in Underwriting.
  • Support the Underwriting organization with various initiatives or focused reviews.
  • Manage and mentor a team of QC underwriters.

 

Experience/Skills:

  • Strong managerial skills, including communication, interpersonal, relationship building, and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding of New York Life products, services, and administrative systems preferred.
  • Strong time management skills to prioritize and implement multiple medium- to large-scale complex initiatives simultaneously.
  • Must have a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to work with little supervision.
  • Advanced Excel and Word knowledge. Tableau knowledge also preferred, but not required.
  • Must have the ability to multitask under tight deadlines.
  • Prior business knowledge required, preferably Underwriting, Product, or Service.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years of experience required
  • 5+ years of team management experience
  • 3+ years prior insurance knowledge required, preferably Underwriting, Product, or Service experience

 

 

 

Salary range: $92,000-$145,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
