Role Summary

 

The Product Owner is highly critical and visible role within Group Benefit Solution (GBS), NYL’s Strategic Line of Business (SIB).  The role is accountable for cross-functional responsibilities supporting GBS’s Product Management function.  As a Product Owner, you are responsible partnering with GBS Operational Teams, Key Stakeholders, and Experience Owners in defining overall Product Vision through Epics, Features, and User Stories.  In addition, a Product Owner is responsible for defining Acceptance Criteria and participate in various SAFe Agile ceremonies for acceptance of the product delivery.  The Product Owner is a crucial member of Agile Release Train (ART) and partners closely with Experience Owner, Product Manager, Release Train Engineer (RTE), Scrum Master, and System Test Lead in defining overall ART Delivery including identifying key dependencies, help prioritize Epics, Features and User Stories for optimum release sequence and value realization.  The Product Owner is also responsible in partnership with Experience Owner to ensure socialization of production requirements with key stakeholders within GBS and NYL Corporate teams and secure their required acceptance

This opportunity is within NYL’s Adminsuite Program, which is a critical initiative for GBS to successfully launch our new Absence and Supplemental Health products.  The Product Owner leads a process area within the Policy/Billing/Claims domain through successful delivery, team engagement and continuous improvement; and works across the different SCRUM teams and with the Product Manager and Experience Owners.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Partner with Product Manager to decompose Program Epic requirements and priorities into features
  • Identify dependencies and help define optimum program feature matrix
  • Define, document, management and detail out user stories for defined features
  • Act as a “subject matter expert” both for their internal Scrum team and also across the ART
  • Take responsibility for prioritization and execution of user stories within each sprint based on optimum sequence
  • Partner with Scrum Master and other ART team members on a regular basis to ensure assigned features are fully executed within the prescribed Program Increment
  • Plan and execute required Product Owner ceremonies as necessary (PI Planning, Grooming, Demo etc.)
  • Lead prioritization of work for delivery team based on business value and engagement with stakeholders
  • Responsible for user story management, including accurate story descriptions and acceptance criteria
  • Actively participate in ART ceremonies like PO Sync and PI planning and escalates risks in a timely manner
  • Drive delivery by providing any clarifications or provide solutions by partnering with stakeholders, software implementers, and business SMEs, and capture decisions and ensure proper user stories assigned to scrum team
  • Provide demonstration of working software and understanding multiple software platforms
  • Effectively work across multiple business units, including Product, Architecture, and Delivery teams
  • Responsible to manage changes to the scope and schedule accordingly. 
  • Effective in working productively with internal and external stakeholders with differing viewpoints

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred in Information Science and Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of successful delivery of business/system analysis including defining Business/functional requirements, Epic/Feature/User Story structure breakdown
  • Demonstrated history of strong communication and collaboration abilities in a highly matrixed environment
  • Strong Planning abilities - demonstrated history of setting milestone dates for a group of project tasks and ensuring their completion
  • Advance written and verbal communication skills, with acumen in synthesizing business dialogue into more concrete language
  • Ability to productively interface with matrix partners with different personal styles and varying levels of technical or business expertise
  • Analytical, organized, and an independent problem-solver
  • Comfortable being flexible in fast paced environment
  • Assertive, responsible for his/her own work (self-directed), have a strong affinity for defining work in deliverables, and be willing to drive for continuous improvement
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills are a must
  • Ability to identify and implement required actions quickly to accomplish goals and eliminate roadblocks
  • Ability to communicate at all levels with clarity, poise, maturity, and precision both written and verbally
  • Results-oriented, diligent and works with a sense of urgency
  • Influential, focused and versatile team player that is comfortable under pressure
