CVP, Underwriting Manager, Special Risk & BTA

Location Designation: Fully Remote

Role Overview:

 

New York Life’s Group Membership Association Division (GMAD) seeks an experienced underwriting manager to help launch a new business within GMAD. This position will lead the underwriting for Special Risk policies including participant, volunteer, and occupational accident as well as Business Travel Accident (BTA). Extensive knowledge of Special Risk / BTA coverages, pricing & tabular rating is required.

 

This individual will work closely with other departments to maximize growth and competitiveness in the Special Risk / BTA markets while maintaining profit targets. Collaboration with other departments will include Distribution, Actuarial, Finance, Strategy & Analytics and Operations. This individual will build and manage a small team of experienced underwriters focused on this area. The GMAD divisional president will interact directly with Special Risk / BTA underwriting on a regular basis to ensure there is support need to reach our growth and profit objectives.

 

This CVP, Underwriting Manager for Special Risk / BTA will also work directly with brokers on new business and renewal underwriting.  This includes both MGU programs and individual case underwriting. The individual stepping into this role should have existing relationships with brokers that provide new business opportunities for GMAD.

 

What You’ll Do:

 

  • Develop and deploy execution strategies in consideration of both growth and financial goals
  • Co-own development and execution of multi-year strategic business plan
  • Development and monitoring of earnings metrics for new and renewal business
  • Shared accountability for Special Risk / BTA P&L.  Provide guidance to market facing teams to drive optimal results
  • Study financial trends to identify revenue, return on investment, profit, and growth opportunities
  • Provide risk and financial insights to make better case decisions
  • Identify and share best practices to drive execution of growth strategy
  • Strategically leverage matrix partnerships and subject matter expertise to execute market strategies
  • Conduct regular touch point meetings with GMAD senior leadership team to gain feedback, take corrective actions and provide guidance
  • Identify and drive process improvements to increase speed to market on quote delivery
  • Provide a broad risk management perspective to all Special Risk / BTA strategic conversations
  • Develop processes and disciplines around monitoring and assessing risk in decisions
  • Always start with and end with customer / client needs, when developing consultative, innovative, and affordable solutions while contemplating the resultant risk
  • Talent Development, including management responsibility for both line level individual contributors and underwriting people managers
  • Provide input on key skills and competencies needed to succeed in underwriting and risk management
  • Be a student of the market. Deliver strategic consultation to external stakeholders – clients, customers, and producers
  • Be a team player.  Proactively share ideas and best practices with peers.  Challenge when appropriate.

What You’ll Bring:

 

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Seven plus years of Special Risk / BTA underwriting experience
  • Minimum of two years (five preferred) of people management experience
  • Relationships with multiple Special Risk / BTA brokers or MGUs
  • Ability to work effectively in dynamic, rapidly changing, team-based environment
  • Strong creative thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills Innovative and creative thinker who develops and recommends thoughtful solutions to complex issues, and drives toward win-win solutions w/ an execution focus
  • Ability to foster collaboration, value others perspectives and gain support and buy-in for organizational proposals

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Some travel required (10 – 20%)

Pay Transparency

Salary Range:  $155,000-$267,500 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No 

 

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
