Position Summary

Are you passionate about the intersection between data-driven insights, impactful business strategy and solving complex challenges? The Strategic Insights team partners with business and enterprise leaders to deliver business intelligence and analytical recommendations to aid in the decision-making process. We help illuminate areas of opportunities to drive incremental value across the business and works on a wide variety of compelling high impact projects that spans marketing, product, sales, and more. As a leader of the Strategic Insights team, you will be a part of a group of highly skilled analytics professionals, with a passion for data and insights.

The Corporate Vice President (CVP) Head of Data Innovation & Prototyping will be leading a team providing data solutions and services that enable New York Life to make better-informed and timely business and strategic decisions.  The lead will be working collaboratively with Business Intelligence and Analytics teams to drive such solutions.

 

Responsibilities

Strategic Insights’ Head of Data Innovation & Prototyping will have ownership of leading in the following major domains:

  • Platform Architecture - A framework and environment to support the data driven enterprise.
  • Data Architecture - Anticipate and monitor trends in data, methodologies and emerging technologies around data.
  • Solution Delivery - Adapt the frameworks, architecture blueprints and utilize the environment to adapt, apply and leverage new capabilities and ultimately prepare for delivery into enterprise-based systems.

 

Platform Architecture

Architect and build an open framework to enhance innovation that supports and enhances the consumption, delivery, translation and understanding of internal, external, and synthetic data sources. Design, Develop and roll out prototyping methodologies support the following:

  • Throw away Prototyping - fast paced POC
  • Horizontal Prototyping - wide angle view of an idea or thought at a high level
  • Vertical prototyping - drill down into specific features to solve for one area

Construct lab environment to enable and support: 1) Rapid technology changes 2) Understand complex integrations in siloed environment 3) Promote rapid solution development 4) Allow for paradigm shifts.

 

Data Architecture

Data plays a key role from customer experience to enabling key decisions. The improvement and differentiation of this experience varies greatly from one team to the next. Develop a scalable and innovative approach to data and streamline way data is leveraged from operational usage to new business opportunities with “never before” used data sources. Provide critical insights and expertise into data and how it relates (or how it can relate) to the current and existing data catalog. Merge new trends into existing governance frameworks and propose new alternatives when needed to ensure adoption is successful

 

Solution Delivery 

Based on architecture review of existing processes and or net new design, deliver designs in a non-technical way clearly outlining benefit, cost and risk assessment. Translate these designs into working proof of value ensuring that they can be handed off to other technical teams and or third party. Develop solutions based on business processes and requirements. Select appropriate tools, services, architecture, framework and infrastructure that can align with enterprise standards.

 

Experience/Qualifications

  • BA/BS required, Business/Computer Science/IT or related field, Master’s preferred
  • 8+ years in data architecture/engineering roles, with 2+ years of team leadership experience
  • Proficient knowledge of logical and physical data modeling concepts (relational, normalized and dimensional), SQL and Cloud technologies (AWS & Redshift)
  • Understanding of data integration issues (including validation and cleaning), familiarity with complex data and structures
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a disciplined approach to experimentation, including hypothesis formation, rational scoping, and sampling techniques to prove hypotheses and/or fail fast, drive relevant observations and unbiased conclusions
  • Strong business acumen to place analytics ideation, experimentation, and innovation in a business context
  • Experience with more than one reporting and business intelligence tool (Domo, PowerBI, Qlik, Spotfire, Tableau, etc.) is preferred
  • Proven record of strategic thought leadership and ability to drive results
  • Proven leadership to develop innovative solutions that values synergy, accepting and leveraging diverse points of view, while meeting the needs of key stakeholders
  • Ability and strong interest to monitor and communicate industry trends, innovations and best practices across segments  
  • Superior communication skills with demonstrated ability to listen, empathize, and influence others by developing a deep understanding of their needs and perspectives, and effectively share a vision for new ideas and innovation solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and effectively build high-trust relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize efforts to focus on high value initiatives with best chances for sponsorship and successful implementation
  • Naturally inquisitive and demonstrated ability to ask powerful questions that explore the rationale and approach behind actions, decisions, and behaviors
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate teams and individuals by prioritizing and leading continuous improvement and engendering excitement over new strategies and initiatives, and influence stakeholders to become champions of novel solutions

Salary range: $157,500-$237,500 

Overtime eligible: Exempt
