Position Summary:

The Corporate Vice President (CVP), Individual Disability Income Underwriting Leader will lead a small team of professional IDI Underwriters, oversee the day-to-day underwriting operation, and collaborate regularly with various leaders on the Disability Income Solutions and Strategic Capabilities teams. The CVP will be responsible for managing and developing members of the IDI underwriting team with a continuous improvement mindset, growing the IDI business, developing relationships with Agency personnel and agents, and exhibiting a deep appreciation for the agent and customer experience during the underwriting process. As the Underwriting lead, this role will be responsible for leading various projects and key initiatives that will drive underwriting efficiencies. This CVP must demonstrate excellent underwriting judgement, decision-making, and critical thinking skills. New York City is the preferred location for this position, but remote working arrangements will be considered.    

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Extensive experience in evaluating IDI applications and determine whether applications should be approved, declined, or if additional information is required based on morbidity, financial, and occupational risks. Selection of risk should be profitable while promoting competitive offers.
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day the IDI Underwriting team, underwriting decisions, and case workflow (e.g., processes, procedures, guidelines, quality assurance/control), governance, relationships, budgets and projects to support IDI’s business strategy and goals.
  • Work effectively with TPA in the timely and accurate management of all IDI underwriting cases in order to meet established SLAs.
  • Collaborate with agency distribution on a regular basis to promote the IDI product line and build a strong reputation for competitive and responsible offers. Active participation on training calls with Product Consultants and agents to educate them on the IDI product.
  • Develop processes and procedures for inforce policy changes, reinstatements, and new product launches.
  • Ability to identify and execute workflow improvements in order to reduce underwriting cycle time and therefore enhancing the agent and client experience during the underwriting process.
  • Manage and maintain solid working relationship with reinsurer.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire IDI Underwriters based on staffing model.
  • Provide employee training, professional development, mentoring, and performance management for the IDI Underwriting team
  • Conduct team and one-to-one meetings with the IDI Underwriting team on a regular basis.
  • Represent New York Life at industry meetings.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new underwriting tools, practices and procedures in order to stay competitive. Provide feedback, insights, and solutions in order to improve overall IDI underwriting operational efficiency.
  • Experience in multi-life and GSI underwriting processes and procedures.
  • Properly address complex and sensitive IDI underwriting issues (e.g. lawsuits, insurance commissioner complaints, chairman complaints).
  • Ensure IDI underwriting operations meet all regulatory and compliance standards with federal and state legislation.

 

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; underwriting designations FLMI, RHU, FALU not required, but helpful.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in disability/IDI underwriting and at least five years of experience in management.
  • Strong communication (written and oral) skills, including drafting and presenting documents to senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority on cross various functional teams and departments as well as work individually.
  • Ability to understand the impact of product form, riders, distribution, regulation, claim management, and pricing have on IDI underwriting rules and decisions.
  • Strong business acumen and execution skills.
  • Proven team building and empowerment skills.

 

 

Salary range: $145,000-$215,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
