Position Summary
This role is responsible for the assessment, design and delivery of the new hire learning and development, as well as the continuing education and the training initiatives of the Underwriting department. Training is focused on a wide variety of skills, including but not limited to, the New York Life underwriting rules and processes, technology systems, industry trends and medical topics.
Responsibilities
- Design, deliver and update training content for the new hire training and continuing education programs.
- Work with subject matter experts on the design and delivery of training initiatives.
- Be a subject matter expert on the underwriting rules, process, and technology resources.
- Coordination and logistics for zone trainers, assigned to support Learning & Development across the four zones, and oversee effective communication with the trainers, their managers, and other key stakeholders within the department.
- Collect feedback, track, and make improvements to training programs and the online underwriting manual.
- Intake, assess and determine training needs based on requests from various stakeholders.
- Monitor, assess and determine action of the requests received in the learning and development inbox.
- Technical Expertise:
- Use your experience to assess training needs, develop appropriate curriculum and deliver content through a blended learning environment.
- Strong understanding of the technical tools required to deliver training (PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom etc.).
- Business knowledge:
- Firm understanding of department goals and ensure that the learning and development programs align with the goals.
- Work with management team and other stakeholders to appropriately assess training needs.
- Leadership skills:
- Can work independently with little guidance.
- Bring knowledge of underwriting and training to team meetings and planning sessions.
- Lead zone trainer meetings and assist with their needs.
- Decision making skills:
- Able to make content design decisions and business process improvements which enhance the learning experience.
- Communication skills:
- Discuss underwriting rules, process changes and training needs analysis with members of the team and underwriting management.
- Ability to influence adoption of training tools and programs. Demonstrate, present, break down complex concepts into logical, digestible content for learners.
- Be perceptive and reactive to the needs of trainees as they emerge in various training situations.
- Be patient, empathetic and supportive of the trainees needs.
- Ability to form and foster relationships across the department.
Experience
- Background in life insurance and/or life insurance underwriting is preferred.
- Strong presentation and communication skills both in person and virtually.
- Knowledge of presentation delivery tool (Zoom, Teams)
- Office 365 suite including PowerPoint, Excel, and Forms.
- Knowledge of learning and development authoring tools a plus (Captivate, Articulate)
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree
- 2-4 years underwriting experience, preferred
- Received or perusing FALU designation, preferred.
Salary range: $65,000-$100,000
Overtime eligible: Exempt
Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes
