Position Summary

New York Life is seeking a highly qualified individual to own new business and underwriting innovation and modernization projects for its Life, Long-Term Care (LTC) and Individual Disability Income (IDI) operations.  This individual will work with colleagues at all levels across functional lines as well as New York Life’s technology and vendor partners. This position requires someone with extensive underwriting experience, strong decision-making ability, the willingness and capability to effectively work collaboratively with others, and an entrepreneurial drive to execute on both day-to-day priorities and longer-term goals.  This is a fully remote position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product ownership of underwriting innovation strategic initiatives
  • Accountable for delivering results and achieving goals of strategic/innovation initiatives
  • Underwriting SME for high-level design, business and functional requirements
  • Accountable for requirements and design on all features provided to vendor, grooming backlog of change request and prioritization
  • Provide underwriting expertise and sound judgement when evaluating options and ultimate objectives
  • Collaborate effectively on delivering results with partners and stakeholders in Underwriting, Field Services, Technology, Agency, and external vendors
  • Coordinate with testing leads on test deployment of features and provide guidance on overall testing approach
  • Identify, evaluate, and analyze potential innovative solutions within the industry to improve underwriting and new business operational efficiency and the customer experience
  • Ensure significant risks to delivery and functionality are appropriately identified 
  • Ability to successfully navigate change management in a large and complex organization setting
  • Coordinate with PMs on action items and deliverables
  • Contribute to the building and maintenance of project roadmaps 


  • Bachelor’s degree required; underwriting designations FLMI, RHU, FALU not required, but helpful
  • Minimum of ten years of underwriting experience  
  • Ability to understand the impact of product, riders, distribution, regulation, claim management and pricing have on underwriting rules and decisions
  • Experience with automated underwriting rules engines not required but a plus
  • Strong communication (written and oral) skills, including drafting and presenting documents to senior management and other stakeholders
  • Strong business acumen and execution skills
  • Certified SCRUM Product Owner or equivalent preferred
  • Understanding of Agile framework
  • Knowledge of program tools such as JIRA, PractiTest, DynaTrace preferred
  • Willingness to take prudent risks based on best information available
  • Experience developing, documenting, implementing project plans
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority on cross functional teams, as well as work individually
  • Ability to meet targets and deadlines



Salary range: $117,500-$177,500 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
