Position Summary

The Senior Associate, Underwriting Rules Engine Maintenance Team, will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of Automated Underwriting and Risk Analysis (AURA), an underwriting rules engine, developing and defining AURA rules requirements for new features, make updates to existing rules to account for underwriting policy changes and drive auto-decisioning without negatively impacting mortality or morbidity. The Senior Associate will collaborate with other AURA team members within Strategic Capabilities, as well as Insurance Technology.


Key responsibilities

  • Analyze the performance of the rules engine to ensure consistent and correct results
  • Achieve stated auto-decisioning and auto-issue rates, while maintaining NYL’s underwriting standards
  • Work with Underwriting Risk Insights and Underwriting Quality Control on analyzing trends, developing reports and dashboards
  • Collaborate with Strategic Solutions Group on to ensure changes and updates to the rule requirements are configured correctly
  • Review AURA decisions due to requests from senior management
  • Collaborate with RGA’s AURA Product Team to develop enhancements that create new capabilities in AURA   
  • Determine how to expand and implement new structured data such as digital health records  
  • Work closely with production underwriting, Medical Directors, UW Quality Control, and UW Learning and Development to create rules engines or underwriting processes/workflow improvements      



  • Experience with underwriting rules engine, preferably RGA’s AURA
  • Analytical skills to develop complex multivariate rule requirements
  • Familiarity with XML and data mapping
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
  • 10 to 15 years advanced life underwriting knowledge and experience (FALU preferred)
  • Excellent understanding of life insurance evidence types, including prescription histories, labs, MVRs, MIB and Digital Health Data
  • Understanding of life insurance sales process, applications, and interviews with reflexive questioning
  • Sets an example for peers in terms of professionalism, work ethic, and delivery of results
  • Integrates New York Life's values into work products and communications
  • Assess opportunities for improvement, especially auto-decisioning and auto-issuing, risks, recommends a course of action and assumes responsibility for decisions
  • Clearly conveys why changes are needed, ability to identify benefits and disadvantages
