Assistant General Counsel, Disability Income and Life Insurance Products

Job Summary

The life insurance unit of the Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice with respect to life insurance and disability income products and other matters of insurance law connected with the life and disability insurance business. In this challenging role, the Assistant General Counsel will work as an integral member of the Office of the General Counsel’s insurance regulatory team. This is a unique opportunity for a top-notch lawyer to work with a wide range of senior business partners and lawyers, and to gain both a theoretical and a pragmatic understanding of insurance law and individual life and disability insurance products.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Provide assistance in all of the following as may be required:

  • Provide advice and any other assistance on a broad range of regulatory matters affecting the development, administration, and marketing of individual disability income products.
  • Provide legal counsel on the administration of disability insurance claims and claims handling.
  • Work closely with the product development, legal and compliance teams to draft, file and gain regulatory approval of new individual disability income products.
  • Provide legal counsel on issues affecting the administration of in-force disability income insurance business.
  • Research and advise on legislative and regulatory matters impacting the individual disability income and life insurance business.
  • Assist life insurance regulatory team in the development, administration, and marketing of life insurance products.
  • Perform legal research and write legal memoranda.


 Required Experience

  • JD required.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • 3 - 5 years’ disability income and/or life insurance regulatory experience; disability income product experience and industry knowledge a plus.

  • Superior proofreading skills and the ability to edit documents and suggest improvements to existing material.
  • A well-balanced consultative approach and the ability to work with business and legal colleagues across all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach issues with both a rigorous attention to detail and a big picture strategic focus.
  • Strong cross-functional risk spotting skills.
  • Proven record of prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • High level of integrity with strong decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability and experience making independent decisions as well as taking reasonable risks.





Salary range: $132,500-$197,500 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
