Sr. Associate, AI Enable & Legal Engineering

Innovation and Strategic Operations, Office of the General Counsel

Join the Office of the General Counsel where we collaborate with diverse business units, providing effective and creative legal guidance that aligns with New York Life's core values.

Your work directly impacts how the company makes decisions, fostering sound business practices, safeguarding its reputation and optimizing efficiency. Become part of a team dedicated to serving as a trusted partner, helping the business navigate the legal landscape and achieve its goals.

The Senior Associate will help shape how the Office of the General Counsel operates in an AI-enabled future. You will be part of the Innovation and Strategic Operations team and will partner closely with attorneys, business partners, Corporate Technology teams to understand how legal work is performed today, redesign how it should be performed tomorrow, and translate those redesigned processes into practical, technology-enabled workflows. This is a hands-on role at the intersection of legal operations, process engineering, and AI implementation, with responsibility for taking solutions from process discovery through workflow build, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead current-state process discovery across OGC by interviewing attorneys, legal professionals, and business partners; observing how work is performed; and documenting end-to-end workflows, decision points, handoffs, inputs, outputs, dependencies, exceptions, and pain points.
  • Create clear process maps and workflow documentation that establish a common understanding of how legal services are delivered today and provide the foundation for AI and technology initiatives.
  • Redesign workflows for an AI-enabled operating model rather than simply automating existing steps. Identify activities that can be eliminated, consolidated, standardized, automated, or augmented by AI, and develop streamlined future-state processes that improve efficiency, consistency, scalability, and user experience.
  • Translate legal practice needs, business requirements, policies, and subject-matter expertise into structured workflow requirements, decision logic, prompts, playbooks, rules, and other components needed to implement technology-enabled solutions.
  • Build and configure workflows directly in AI, automation, intake, knowledge, and workflow platforms adopted by OGC, including creating prototypes and minimum viable solutions and iterating them with users.
  • Partner with attorneys, subject-matter experts, corporate technology, procurement, vendors, and other stakeholders to integrate AI-enabled workflows into day-to-day legal work and broader operating processes.
  • Design and execute testing, validation, and quality-control approaches for AI-enabled workflows, including test scenarios, expected outcomes, exception handling, human-review points, and feedback loops to support accuracy, reliability, and appropriate use.
  • Maintain process maps, workflow specifications, configuration documentation, and implementation artifacts so solutions are understandable, repeatable, supportable, and scalable across OGC.
  • Support pilots and production implementations from discovery through launch, including requirements gathering, workflow design, configuration, user acceptance testing, issue resolution, change management, training, and post-launch optimization.
  • Assess workflow performance and user feedback after implementation and continuously refine processes, prompts, rules, and configurations as technology capabilities and legal practice needs evolve.
  • Help evaluate new AI and legal technology capabilities by translating product functionality into concrete legal use cases and assessing where a platform can meaningfully improve or replace existing ways of working.
  • Promote a culture of experimentation, process discipline, and continuous improvement, helping OGC build repeatable legal engineering practices that can be applied across practice areas.

What You’ll Bring

You are a process-oriented builder who is curious about how work actually gets done and energized by making it better. You can move comfortably between detailed conversations with legal professionals and hands-on work in technology platforms. You know how to deconstruct a complex process, challenge assumptions about which steps are truly necessary, design a simpler future state, and turn that design into a working solution. You bring strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, sound judgment, and a practical approach to experimentation and iteration.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in process improvement, business process engineering, workflow design, technology implementation, business transformation, consulting, or a related function.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting process discovery, including working with stakeholders to understand how work is performed, documenting current-state processes, identifying pain points and dependencies, and designing streamlined future-state workflows.
  • Strong process design and analytical skills, with the ability to challenge existing ways of working and identify opportunities to eliminate, simplify, standardize, automate, or redesign process steps rather than simply replicating existing processes in technology.
  • Demonstrated experience translating business processes and requirements into working technology-enabled workflows, automations, prototypes, or configured solutions.
  • Hands-on ability to learn, configure, and build across workflow, automation, low-code/no-code, AI-enabled, or similar technology platforms. Specific platform experience is less important than demonstrated ability to learn new tools and apply them to business problems.
  • Experience testing and iterating technology-enabled workflows, including developing test scenarios, gathering user feedback, identifying issues, and refining solutions prior to and following implementation.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills, including the ability to ask detailed questions, understand how work is actually performed, reconcile different perspectives, and translate between business users and technology partners.
  • Strong project ownership, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to take an initiative from discovery and process design through build, testing, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience applying process improvement, workflow design, or technology solutions within a legal department, law firm, financial services organization, or other highly regulated environment.
  • Hands-on experience designing, configuring, or implementing generative AI-enabled workflows or solutions, including the practical use of large language models to support professional or knowledge-based work.
  • Familiarity with AI solution design concepts such as prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, structured outputs, and human-in-the-loop processes.
  • Experience evaluating and validating AI-enabled solutions, including approaches for assessing accuracy, reliability, consistency, and appropriate human oversight.
