Director, Derivatives
Location Designation: Hybrid - 4 days per week
The Derivatives Team, part of the Office of the Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) at New York Life, plays a critical role in executing the firm’s general account investment strategy by designing and managing hedge programs and overlays for the company’s assets and liabilities. This team conducts customized derivatives analysis and delivers market insights that directly enhance portfolio construction and investment performance.
We are seeking a highly motivated Director to lead the development and ongoing enhancement of a suite of quantitative tools and dashboards that provide actionable insights into performance attribution and risk exposures across our hedge programs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong quantitative foundation, demonstrated expertise in data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau), and hands-on experience working with derivatives across multiple asset classes. This role presents a unique opportunity for the individual to help build out the derivatives platform at New York Life while gaining exposure to the investment and hedging strategy of a dynamically-managed insurance asset portfolio.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop new infrastructure and analytical tools using Tableau, SQL Workbench, Beacon, python and generative AI tools (e.g., Claude code, Cursor) to organize data related to all the swaps, forwards, futures, and options owned by NYL
- Support the monitoring and management of the derivatives portfolio, with a focus on market risk analytics, platform capability development, and reporting automation
- Create Tableau dashboards to summarize key metrics about NYL’s hedge programs, including measuring hedge effectiveness, assessing current exposure relative to defined limits, and aggregating greek sensitivities of the derivatives positions
- Enhance the daily P&L attribution process for derivatives positions utilizing Beacon libraries and Aladdin valuation modules
- Partner with internal quantitative, technology, and investment teams to understand modeling and coding needs and help evolve our analytical and reporting infrastructure
- Contribute to the design, enhancement, and ongoing use of tools and processes used to manage derivative exposures and related risks
- Analyze complex datasets to support portfolio insights, assess liquidity risk, and inform hedge strategy and decision-making
- Help identify and address Asset Liability Management (ALM)–related challenges, including evaluating potential derivatives solutions where appropriate
- Collaborate with internal and external partners (including counterparties and vendors) to support analytical initiatives and infrastructure development
- Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data used in analysis and reporting
- Support continuous improvement of reporting, dashboards, and analytics used by the derivatives team and the broader investment teams
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in investments, derivatives, fixed income modeling, actuarial science, market risk, analytics, risk management, or a related quantitative field
- Strong analytical and quantitative background with demonstrated problem-solving skills and programing experience
- Experience working with data and analytics tools, including SQL, relational databases (e.g., AWS), and Tableau or similar business intelligence/visualization platforms
- Tangible experience with interest rate, equity, and/or currency derivatives is preferred
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and apply critical thinking
- Detail-oriented, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex topics clearly
- Familiarity with analytical platforms such as Beacon, Aladdin, Numerix (or comparable risk/analytics software) is highly desirable
- Experience supporting or collaborating with technology teams, developers, or quantitative modelers; direct software development experience is not required
- Familiar with insurance company ALM techniques and general account investment strategies; application of derivatives overlays is a plus, but not required
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including investment professionals, technologists, and insurance product specialists
- Experience with US Statutory Accounting is beneficial
