Position Summary

New York Life is seeking a highly qualified individual to manage new business and underwriting innovation projects for its Life Insurance, Long-Term Care (LTC) and Individual Disability Income (IDI) operations.  This individual will work with colleagues at all levels across functional lines as well as New York Life’s technology and vendor partners. This position requires someone with understanding of underwriting and new business operations experience, strong decision-making ability, the ability to effectively work collaboratively with others, and an entrepreneurial drive to execute on both day-to-day priorities and longer-term goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountable for delivering results and achieving goals of strategic/innovation initiatives
  • New business SME for high-level design, business, and functional requirements
  • Provide operational expertise and sound judgement when evaluating options and ultimate objectives
  • Collaborate effectively on delivering results with partners and stakeholders in Underwriting, Field Services, Technology, Agency, and external vendors
  • Coordinate with testing leads on test deployment of features and provide guidance on overall testing approach
  • Identify, evaluate, and analyze potential innovative solutions within the industry to improve underwriting and new business operational efficiency and the customer experience
  • Ensure significant risks to delivery and functionality are appropriately identified 
  • Ability to successfully navigate change management in a large and complex organizational setting
  • Coordinate with PMs on action items and deliverables
  • Contribute to the building and maintenance of project roadmaps
  • Prepares communications regarding project direction, decisions, issues, risks, and status for management
  • Ability to deliver results in highly collaborative and cross-functional environment with focus on execution
  • Lead and actively participate in RFP/RFI initiatives and work closely with business partners and legal to execute contracts


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of five years of underwriting or new business operational experience  
  • Understanding of product, riders, distribution channels, underwriting, and regulatory issues in relation to new business operations
  • Knowledge of Agile tools such as JIRA is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of Scaled Agile Frameworks (SAFe) is a plus
  • Strong power-point presentation & excel skills
  • Strong communication (written and oral) skills, including drafting and presenting documents to senior management and other stakeholders
  • Willingness to take prudent risks based on best information available
  • Experience developing, documenting, implementing project plans
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels of seniority on cross functional teams, as well as work individually
  • Ability to meet targets and deadlines
