New York Life’s Group Benefit Solutions (GBS) business sells Life, Accident, and Disability insurance to employer groups across the United States. GBS is seeking an experienced actuary for its Reserving unit, where this role will support monthly reserve calculations and analysis providing actionable insight to senior management in determining business priorities. This role will also contribute to ongoing GBS integration efforts, most prominently in the implementation of a new general ledger system and other associated financial reporting systems. Lastly, the role will seek to identify refinements in reserve methodology and assumptions, ensuring timely and accurate implementation of all such updates.



  • Managing 2 to 3 early career actuarial team members.
  • Performing analysis and providing commentary on drivers of monthly loss ratio results relative to expectations.
  • Providing quarterly projections of expected loss ratios and key financial and operational metrics.
  • Preparing actuarial liability exhibits for annual statement.
  • Define reserving process updates and improvements in contributing to implementation of new general ledger system.
  • Identify refinements to methodologies and assumptions that will arrive at more effective reserve estimates and work with the experience studies team to deliver.
  • Assist in planning team resource usage according contributions to overall GBS business strategy and priorities.
  • Drive partnership across various business functions to achieve common goals (Pricing, Accounting, IT, Claim Management, external audit).



  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) with 6+ years relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with Statutory and GAAP accounting concepts.
  • Familiarity with actuarial mathematics and insurance concepts.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize and effectively communicate complex financial results.
  • Strong business partnering and communication skills.
  • Strong time management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SQL, querying complex database structures.
