Role Overview:
Underwriting Quality Control and Management team has three priorities: risk assessment accuracy, monitor consistency across geographical teams and assessment of the utilization of new tools. For risk assessment, the goals are to gain assurance that the Underwriting team utilizes best practices, adheres to company guidelines, complies with regulations, and that New York Life clients receive the best offer possible as quickly as possible. Underwriting Quality Control and Management evaluates consistency across all underwriting locations and results are utilized to evaluate Underwriters’ performance, assess learning and development needs, update the Underwriting Manual, and suggest system enhancements. In addition, Underwriting Quality Control and Management assesses the utilization of new innovative tools such as predictive models and medical records summarization to help determine if more support is needed. The team will grow and support the Life, Long Term Care, and Individual Disability product lines. This team resides with in the Purchase Experience which is responsible for driving a modern purchase journey for our agents and clients.

As the team lead, you will work to develop a quality control and management process that not only looks for improvement opportunities in NYL’s underwriting practices but also drive innovative review processes to understand how new tools are used by the Underwriting team.
What You'll Do:
- Conduct risk and mortality accuracy reviews for Life, Individual Disability Income (IDI), and Long-Term Care (LTC) products, ensuring adherence to best practices, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements through the management of a QC team.
- Identify and implement improvements in the quality of underwriting for Life, LTC, and IDI products.
- Review and advise on adherence to compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Analyze trends to identify opportunities for improvement with processes, tools.
- Collaborate with Learning & Development to identify and address learning opportunities.
- Proactively participate in the change management working group on changes that are presented.
- Solve complex problems and recommend best practices.
- Participate in projects of varying sizes, using expertise to recommend process improvements.
- Complete referrals on cases with findings and work with underwriting management on issues or remediation.
- Generate reports and analytics on quality control findings to inform underwriting performance metrics.
- Conduct targeted underwriting reviews to assess individual underwriter abilities.
- Oversee and perform post-issue audits on cases with reduced underwriting requirements through specific acceleration programs or straight-through processing.
- Assist with the transition to new software and tools, including testing, reporting, and monitoring changes.
- Establish a quality review process for Individual Disability Insurance.
- Build strong partnerships with underwriting and purchase experience leadership.
- Recommend and drive the implementation of new quality reviews and processes.
- Support various purchase experience and underwriting initiatives.
- Coach and mentor a team of underwriters on quality control processes and drive innovation with the team.
- Collaborate with underwriting leadership team and provide guidance or insights.
What You'll Bring:
- Bachelor's Degree with 5 to 10 years of experience in Underwriting, Quality Assurance or Quality Control in addition to a minimum of 3 years of prior insurance knowledge, preferably in Underwriting, Product, or Service.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills5.
- Excellent managerial, relationship-building, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in working with AI tools such as CoPilot, GenAI, and ChatGPT.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft 365 Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint, with experience in building presentations, and knowledge of Tableau.
- Ability to learn complex information and develop quality control approaches.
- Knowledge of tools, processes, and systems used by Underwriting and New Business Operations.
- Strong understanding of New York Life’s business strategies and priorities.
- Familiarity with New York Life products, services, and administrative systems is preferred.
- Strong time management skills to prioritize and implement multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
- A continuous improvement and growth mindset.
- Ability to drive results, work independently and multitask under tight deadlines.
Pay Transparency
Salary Range: $90,000-$175,000
Overtime eligible: Exempt
Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes
Sales bonus eligible: No
Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
