Position Summary

Reporting to the Structured Settlements (SS) CVP/Manager, the SS Senior Associate is responsible for reviewing and evaluating non-standard medical records (“medicals”) and supporting documents from our brokers in order to determine an appropriate rated age for each proposed annuitant.  With an underwriting approval authority of  -35% mortality, the SS Senior Associate is expected to underwrite cases from  a lay and medical standpoint, including the underwriting of complex cases, and promptly communicate rated ages to our brokers. The position requires the SS Senior Associate to perform his or her duties with the highest level of urgency and accuracy in order to provide our brokers with high quality underwriting and meet our 24-48 hour turnaround time. The SS Senior Associate is expected to deliver service excellence to our brokers and internal customers and participate in projects as needed, including those designed to improve or enhance our efficiency and workflow.

 

The Senior Associate may also be expected to assist in supervising the workflow and productivity of our clerical support staff (our “Admins”), underwrite an increased caseload, and assume Managerial duties in the absence of the SS CVP/Manager.

 

SS Senior Associates utilize Structured Settlement Underwriting Guidelines to evaluate a proposed annuitant’s mortality risk. However, due to the complexity associated with multiple disease processes or conditions identified in the medical records or the scarcity of information provided, SS Senior Associates often need to evaluate cases based on their own medical knowledge, level of experience, and research.  As a result, in depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, trauma and disease, and medical terminology is required. The SS CVP/Manager is available for consultation as necessary.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Underwrite cases via review and evaluation of medical records (“medicals”) and supporting documents from our brokers
  • Perform work with a high level of urgency and accuracy
  • Promptly communicate rated ages to our brokers via email and/or Fax within 24-48 hour turnaround time
  • Answer inquiries from brokers and internal customers regarding underwriting evaluations and rated age determinations
  • Refer cases to SS CVP/Manager when necessary (mortality exceeds underwriting approval authority or case is very complex)
  • Assume Managerial duties in the absence of the SS CVP/Manager
  • Supervise the workflow and productivity of clerical staff (our “Admins”)
  • Attend continuing education underwriting seminars and/or participate in online courses
  • Participate in projects when necessary

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred: Nursing background or other Science/Health-related field

 

Experience

  • 5+ years of related experience
  • In depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, trauma and disease, medical terminology 
  • Requires advanced level of expertise in own discipline and knowledge of related disciplines
  • Interprets business challenges, identifies trends and recommends best practices
  • May play key role in functional projects, processes or vendor management with moderate resource requirements and/or complexity
  • Collaborates with others to solve complex problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought and education and/or equivalent experience to exercise judgment and identify innovative solutions
  • Makes decisions that have cross-functional impact
  • Communicates difficult concepts; influences others to adopt a different point of view

 

 

Salary range: $90,000-$135,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No
